Give a rusted metal look to any photograph using PhotoShop

Step 1: Select any high Quality photograph in PhotoShop.

Step 2: Create a Duplicate Copy of this layer since the Background layer is locked. This is done by right clicking on the background layer and selecting the Duplicate Layer Option.

Step 3: Select the Fill option from the Edit Menu.

Set the Use to 50% Gray.

Step 4: Now add some noise to this fill by selecting the Add Noise option from the Filter Menu. The more you fill noise into the layer more the rusty effect you will get in the end.

Set the Amount to 13% and the distribution to uniform.

Step 5: Keeping the Layer selected and select the Motion Blur option from the Filter Menu.

In the Motion Blur dialog Box set the Angle to 2 degrees and Distance to 16 pixels. Note for other Photograph adjust the angle and distance differently to get the desired effect.

Step 6: Create a new layer, by selecting New Layer option from the Layer Palette. In this layer we will put the rust color.

Step 7: Again Select the Fill option from the Edit Menu, but this time change set Use to color.

Now select a dull orange shade, this will be the rust color.

Step 8: Now that we have added the color, let’s get the rusty look on the photograph.

To do so, select the Texturizer option from the Filter Menu.

In the Texturizer Dialog Box, set the Texture to Sandstone and set Scaling and Relief to get the desired effect.

Step 9: Now that we have applied rust to our metal, we are now ready to mask out portions of the rust. Select the Add Layer Mask option from the Layer Palette as shown below.

Step 10: Now select the Apply Image option from the Image Menu.

Set the different values as shown in the figure below.

Step 11: Now that the Rusty Effect looks good, we just need to do a few small manipulations to get the desired effect.

Now select the Brightness/Contrast Option from the Image Menu.

Adjust the Brightness and Contrast till you get the desired effect.

Step 12: Now we will distort the Layer Mask a little more, so we will add some glass texture. To do so, select the Glass Option from the filter Menu.

Set the Glass Texture to frosted and set the Distortion and Smoothness till you get the desired effect.

So now our Rusty look is almost done, we need to add a little depth to the Art work.

Step 13: To give some depth select the Lighting Effect option from the Filter Menu.

In the Lighting Dialog Box, Set Gloss and material at -100 or some where near it, till you get a good effect. Shift Exposure and Ambience by little amounts till you are satisfied. The most important setting here is the Texture Channel setting, set it to red and move the height to get a good lighting effect.

Well you have to experiment with the lighting texture a lot of times till you get a good effect.

Step 14: Lastly select the gray layer and again experiment with the Lighting effect to get the desired result.

Here is my final Image.

Convert a photograph into a painting done by an artist using Adobe Photoshop.

Step 1: Select a suitable photograph and open it on your Photoshop Canvas.

Step 2: Now make a Duplicate of this Background Layer. This we do because the Background Layer is locked so we cannot do any changes to it.

Step 3: Go to the Image Menu and select Shadow/Highlight under the Adjustment Submenu.

Step 4: Brighten the Photograph completely by setting the shadows Amount to 100%.

Step 5: From Filter Menu, select Find Edges under the Stylize submenu.

Step 6: From Edit Menu select Fade Find edges options to produce the final magic.

Mode should be changed to Luminosity in the dialog box opened and reduce the Opacity till the desired effect is achieved. For this photograph i set the Opacity to 30%.

Here is my Final Outcome.
